The Imitation of Christ

Today's Scripture

“Christ…is your example…follow in his steps. He never sinned, nor ever deceived anyone. He did not retaliate when he was insulted, nor threaten revenge when he suffered. He left his case in the hands of God, who always judges fairly.” 1 Peter 2:21-23 NLT.

Thoughts for Today

The Imitation of Christ made an immediate impact when it was published in 1418 AD. Its author was anonymous, but its truths were so powerful that it became perhaps the most widely read Christian book in history, second only to the Bible. Over time, it was generally agreed that it was written by Thomas Hammerken (who more widely was called Thomas à Kempis).

Kempis died on this date in 1471, at the young age of 31. Known for his intimate walk with the Lord, he filled this book with insights about growing in Christ.

He warned Believers to be aware of how easy it is to imitate the world. He prayed, “Grant me, Lord, to know all that I should know, to love what I should love, to esteem what most pleases You, and to reject all that is evil in Your sight.” He knew “how quickly the glory of the world passes away.”

Kempis stressed the importance of love and humility: “Study to do another’s will rather than thine own. Choose ever to have less rather than more. Seek ever the lower place and to be subject to all; ever wish and pray that the will of God may be perfectly done in thee and in all. Behold such a man enters the bounds of peace and calm.”

Like Peter, Kempis knew that Jesus should be our example and that we should “follow in His steps.”

Today, don’t be like many in the world who model their lives after celebrities, singers, or athletes. Make sure that you imitate Jesus. Surrender your life to Him. Make it your ambition to please Him. Be an example to others!

Prayer : Our Loving Heavenly Father, I want to be more like Jesus. I submit my life to You. Help me to follow Your leading. I pray that others would see Jesus in me. Thank you for hearing and answering my prayer. Gratefully, In Jesus Loving Name I Pray, Amen."

Have a Blessed Wednesday and God Bless you.
