Merriam joined the team at the Brevard Zoo in Florida under dire circumstances. The sea turtle was found floating on his side, covered in barnacles with an open wound in his shell. Animal experts at the zoo took about five months to nurse him back to health. Tuesday evening, a swarm of animal lovers joined Merriam on the beach to watch him swim off back into his natural habitat. He was named after being admitted to the zoo on Dictionary Day.
